3 Helpful Ottawa Web Marketing Events and MeetUps

Over the years, I’ve been to lots of marketing events and some of them have come and gone (RIP Social Media Breakfast) but there are still some good Ottawa web marketing events. One thing I always look for in any marketing event is real, tangible advice from people who actually practice marketing on a day-to-day basis. All too often you’ll hear some guy who used to work for the biggest brand in the world telling how they did something 5 years ago. Sure, some things never change but many brands/people in Ottawa couldn’t even spell Twitter 5 years ago.

So here are 3 of my favorite Ottawa web marketing events:

IABC Ottawa’s Networking In The New Year

The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) has a chapter in Ottawa and they are fairly active in terms of events. Every January, they have one event in particular called “Networking In The New Year”.

What makes this event so good is that you get to sit at small tables with other marketers and talk to people working in marketing today. You might get somebody from a non-profit, ecommerce website or government department who’s done something cool that you can learn from and you’ll get to ask them questions in an intimate environment.

MARCOM Professional Development Forum

2019 Update: Since we wrote this post, MARCOM seems to have stopped running… but keep your eyes peeled in case someone brings it back.

MARCOM tends to skew towards public and non-profit marketers but there is definitely something for everyone there. This one happens in June every year at the beautiful Shaw Centre. They have an amazing line up of speakers, many of who are specialists in web marketing. I would suggest you take a look at the roundtables as well. Lots of opportunity to share knowledge at this conference… and we love their advisory committee!

Invest Ottawa’s Workshops

If you’re looking for really practical advice on web marketing in Ottawa, one of the things to do would be to attend one of Invest Ottawa’s workshops. They have a slate of events that appear to run every month, so if you miss something you’d like to attend, there should be another session in about four weeks.

I haven’t been to any of these workshops yet but I’ve heard they are a great way to get into a small room with an expert teacher and learn some of the basic or semi-advanced things you’d need to know.
