What’s your favourite colour? Why do you like that colour? What does that colour make you feel?

We all know a lot goes into planning a brand and it may seem obvious to pick colours that are “nice” looking but colour is a lot more than just making a product visually appealing. Colour influences our everyday decisions even if we don’t realize it. It can change people’s moods, persuade people into making decisions, even decrease or increase one’s appetite. If colour has this much influence over audiences then that makes it a very powerful tool for marketers.

Different emotions and attributes are associated with each colour. Depending on how you want your audience to act then you should consider using colours that promote that behaviour. Whether it is encouraging people to subscribe to something, buy something or even to think something, colour is a powerful tool to help get your message across.

While there are many uses and meanings for colours, there are general attributes associated with each colour:

  • Red: Associated with boldness, love, urgency and is also an attention getter. Red is an emotionally intense colour.
  • Orange: Often denotes new beginnings, enthusiasm, and creativity. Orange is a vibrant, lively colour.
  • Yellow: A cheerful attention getter and is often associated with liveliness and being energetic.
  • Green: Symbolic of nature. Green is one of the easiest colours on the eyes and is commonly associated with safety, kindness, growth, wealth, and friendliness.
  • Blue: Commonly used. Associated with tranquility, depth, honour, trust, and productivity.
  • Purple: Historically connected to royalty, nobility, power and wealth. Purple can also be associated with spirituality.
  • Pink: Often attributed to femininity, love, and romance. Pink has also been know to produce a calming effect.
  • Brown: Solid, dependable, and confident are often traits associated to brown.
  • White: Signifying purity, cleanliness, sterility, and youth. Associated with balance and neutrality.
  • Grey: Usually associated with being conservative, traditional and serious.

Careful colour choices can determine whether or not audiences react positively to your brand. Be sure to remember the importance of colour or it could have your audience seeing red.
