Getting Out of a Creative Rut: A Designer’s Perspective

As a graphic designer, creativity and originality is a must. Much of our work requires us to be “on the ball” (if you will) with creativity the minute we step into the office up until the minute we can call it a day. Every client expects their work to be creative and original – and who can blame them? – Nobody wants second hand scraps.

Unfortunately, the brains of designers do not have a “creative switch” we can just turn on and off whenever we please (however “robotic” you may think we are). So, what do designers do when they’re stuck in a rut? Below is a list of tips and tricks that can be used to dig yourself out:

Find Inspiration

A good way to get yourself motivated and inspired is to surf the net. Source out designs that relate to what you’re working on, or just browse around. It’s incredible how motivated you can get just by looking at other great designs – you get amped to create something just as incredible. I find a lot of my inspiration on creattica.com

Stay in the Designer Loop

Subscribe to blogs, newsletters, magazines – anything that provides you with new information about design – what’s trendy, what’s not etc. Filling your brain everyday with knowledge of the design world can help prevent these ruts.

Get Your Mind Off Things

Sometimes, the best thing to do is clear your head (especially when the frustration hits). Step away from your work for a while – take a walk, run or do whatever gets your mind off of the task at hand. You will be amazed at how rejuvenated you feel when you return. Now, you can approach the task with fresh eyes and a clear head.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Brainstorm: Sit down with a group, and listen to what they have to say. Hearing another person’s approach on the topic can help you generate your own ideas.
